FAQ
For travelers planning a visit and local hosts ready to help.
A little clarity for both sides of the journey. Requests and host applications are open; paid bookings, screening and video matching are planned.
For Travelers
Plan your visit, understand the support and know what to expect.
Who are your hosts, and how do you assess safety?
Our planned host screening includes identity verification, a language assessment and a basic background review. These checks are not yet an operating certification programme; a reviewed application does not mean a host has passed them, and no screening can guarantee safety.
The intended process is to meet by video, confirm the fit and agree service terms before paying the platform. Host payment would be released after the agreed service is completed. Video matching, payment holding and settlement are not available yet.
Does MedTripHost provide medical diagnosis or treatment?
No. MedTripHost connects travelers with local companions for practical assistance, such as airport transfers, everyday language help, hospital accompaniment and day-to-day support. Diagnosis, treatment, prescriptions and medical decisions belong to the qualified medical institution you choose in China. A host does not provide clinical advice or replace a qualified medical interpreter.
Can a host help me book an appointment at a Chinese hospital?
You can request help using the hospital’s official appointment channels, where the hospital permits an authorized person to assist. Hosts can help with the booking process, but appointment availability is controlled by the hospital. We cannot guarantee an appointment with a particular specialist.
Hospitals commonly require real-name registration and valid identification. Confirm the hospital’s passport requirements and authorize your host only for the information needed to book. Enter passport details directly through official hospital channels wherever possible; do not submit them in the MedTripHost request form. A host must keep any information you authorize them to handle confidential and use it only for the agreed purpose.
What if my medical treatment lasts longer than my permitted stay in China?
Medical treatment does not automatically extend your lawful stay. Check the permission actually granted at entry: a port visa (sometimes called a visa on arrival), visa-free entry and visa-free transit have different rules. Contact the local Public Security Bureau’s exit-entry administration as soon as a longer stay becomes likely, before your current permission expires.
For an ordinary visa, the National Immigration Administration (NIA) requires an extension application at least seven days before the permitted stay ends. If you entered visa-free or under visa-free transit, ask about the applicable stay-permit procedure before your permitted period expires; do not assume the same visa-extension deadline applies. If the deadline is close or has already passed, contact the authority immediately.
Ask your hospital for written confirmation of the treatment, expected duration and why continued care or delayed travel is necessary. Confirm the required documents with the authority, including your passport, application form, photograph and supporting evidence. If illness prevents you from attending in person, ask whether an eligible representative can apply for you.
Only the immigration authority can decide whether to approve an extension or stay permit and for how long. A hospital letter, a host’s assistance or submitting an application is not a guarantee of approval. Ask the authority how your stay is documented while an accepted application is being processed, and follow its instructions.
Your host can help with communication and practical arrangements. For official guidance, call the NIA hotline 12367 in China; English service is available. If lengthy treatment is foreseeable, confirm the appropriate visa with a Chinese embassy or consulate before traveling.

What if I have an emergency during my appointment or trip?
For a medical emergency in mainland China, call 120 or ask someone nearby to call immediately. Do not wait for a response from this website. An accompanying host can help contact emergency services and, with your permission where possible, your family at home or your insurer. Hosts are not emergency medical providers.
Before traveling, consider insurance that covers your planned activities, medical care and emergency assistance in China. Check exclusions for pre-existing conditions, planned treatment and medical evacuation directly with your insurer.
I have a food allergy or need a gluten-free diet. What should I know?
Based on our experience living in China and Canada, the vast majority of restaurants in mainland China are unfamiliar with severe peanut allergies and medically necessary gluten-free diets. If you are used to restaurants in Europe or North America understanding these needs, do not expect the same understanding in China.
You must assume that staff do not understand at all how serious your peanut allergy or medically necessary gluten-free diet is. Even if they say “I understand,” you must not take that as proof that they understand the danger or can prepare a safe meal. A nod or a simple “no problem” is not enough. You must explicitly explain that peanut allergy can be life-threatening and that a medically required gluten-free diet is not a preference. Verify the ingredients, cooking oils and precautions against cross-contact before eating. If you cannot confirm them, do not eat the food.
Carry a clearly translated Chinese card listing the exact ingredients you must avoid and explaining the risk from cross-contact. Ask staff to check every ingredient, including sauces and cooking oils, and whether utensils, woks or frying oil are shared. Simply removing visible peanuts or other allergens does not make a dish safe. If ingredients or preparation cannot be confirmed, do not eat it.
Wheat allergy, celiac disease and gluten sensitivity are different conditions. Describe your specific condition and follow your clinician’s advice about what to avoid, rather than relying on the vague phrase “gluten allergy.”
A host can help communicate your requirements, but cannot guarantee an allergen-free meal. Before travel, discuss an emergency plan with your clinician and keep prescribed emergency medication with you. For a suspected severe allergic reaction, follow that plan immediately and call 120 in mainland China; do not wait for a host or the platform to respond.

How are fees calculated? Are medical care and accommodation included?
Your Proposed Budget is for the host’s time and agreed local assistance. Medical bills, accommodation, transport and other third-party costs are separate and should be paid directly to the relevant provider. Agree any host expenses in advance.
Sending a request is free and no payment is collected by this website. The full service price and any platform fee will be disclosed before a paid service is agreed.
Can I cancel or get a refund if my visa is delayed or my health changes?
You can withdraw your current request at any time, free of charge, using your private status link. No booking is locked in and no payment is taken when you submit.
For future paid arrangements, changes, cancellation deadlines and refund rules will be explained in the Service Terms before you agree or pay. Those transaction rules are not yet in effect. Hospital, hotel and other third-party charges follow the relevant provider’s own cancellation terms.
For Local Hosts
Understand your role, your choices and the boundaries of local support.
What qualifications do I need? Do I need a medical background?
A medical qualification is not required to apply for a practical support role. We value clear communication in English or the traveler’s preferred language, local knowledge, familiarity with transport and hospital procedures, patience and reliability. You must be an adult applying as an individual.
Everyday language assistance and appointment accompaniment do not qualify you to diagnose, recommend treatment or interpret complex clinical information. Ask the medical institution to arrange qualified clinical language support when needed.
Am I responsible if a traveler’s condition worsens or something goes wrong with treatment?
Your role is practical assistance and companionship. You do not make medical decisions or guarantee the medical institution’s treatment outcome. This does not exempt you from responsibility for your own conduct or failure to perform agreed duties.
Article 506 of China’s Civil Code makes contractual exclusions of liability invalid where they concern personal injury to the other party, or property loss caused to the other party by intentional conduct or gross negligence. Service terms cannot override these limits.
Whether a host is liable in a particular case depends on the facts and applicable law. A worsening condition alone does not establish liability, and a non-medical role does not create blanket immunity.

How will I receive payment for my services?
The traveler and host would agree the scope and budget during matching. The planned payment process is for the traveler to pay the platform after accepting the arrangement, with settlement to the host’s nominated account after agreed milestones or completion.
Payment holding, settlement and refunds are not available in the current release. Fees, release conditions, payment-provider arrangements and dispute rules must be disclosed before paid bookings open. An application or expression of interest does not create a paid booking.
Who pays for transport, meals or tickets during the service?
Necessary expenses incurred while accompanying the traveler, such as an agreed shared taxi or admission needed to accompany them, should be agreed with the traveler in advance. Specify which costs are included in your fee and which will be reimbursed separately.
Ask the traveler to pay providers directly where possible. If you agree to advance an expense, keep the receipt and arrange prompt reimbursement. Do not assume personal meals, discretionary purchases or unapproved expenses will be covered.
What rules apply when I help someone book a hospital appointment?
Use only the hospital’s official channels and follow its real-name registration and authorization requirements. Never buy appointment slots from brokers or scalpers, resell slots, or charge a resale markup. Any agreed fee must be for legitimate assistance and clearly explained in advance.
Use passport information only with the traveler’s authorization and only for the appointment task. Appointment reselling is grounds for permanent exclusion from the platform. Misuse of personal information or unlawful booking practices may also have legal consequences.
What happens if I cannot secure an appointment?
A lack of hospital availability does not, by itself, mean you failed to provide the agreed assistance. Make no promises about scarce specialist slots, use official channels promptly as agreed, and keep the traveler informed. Responsibility depends on the agreement, your conduct and applicable law; it cannot be decided solely by whether a booking succeeded.
The intended policy is to refund the fee for an unsuccessful appointment-booking assistance service. The exact scope and process will be set out before paid services open; this website currently collects no such fees. Hospital charges and other third-party costs remain subject to their own rules.
Can I choose when I work and whom I host?
Yes. Matching is a mutual choice. You can decide which reviewed travel requests to express interest in and share your availability and preferred languages. An expression of interest is not an obligation to accept a booking, and travelers are equally free to choose another host.
The intended next step is a video conversation to discuss compatibility, followed by service terms only if both people agree. Automatic matching notifications and video interviews are not available yet; you can currently browse requests by city and submit your interest for review.
